"If you have reached a point where you truly feel comfortable and confident in your own skin, what you adorn it with should reflect it."
Drawn to the philosophy of “skin first”, hair and makeup artist Airin Lee is known in the industry for her work ethic and dedication to honing her craft and working alongside both brands and the community at large in creating and redefining beauty standards.
An ode to quiet confidence, Airin’s persona and work speaks for itself and embodies quiet resilience and resolute strength. Her makeup style can be easily described with these three words: feminine, crisp and clean. Her artistry has since positioned her as one of the prominent “go-to” figures within the local makeup scene, and it's safe to say that her hard work has definitely paid off.
It comes as no surprise that beneath the glamour of the beauty industry lies hours of hard work and dedication. She has managed to juggle her hectic schedule working with brands while at the same time pursuing further studies in cosmetic science.
Nonetheless, despite being armed with an arsenal of makeup knowledge, she believes in humility and constant learning above all else. Most recently Airin launched ARLY to build and journey with an inspired community of skincare and beauty enthusiasts.
While her profession is one in which appearances matter, she advocates for inner beauty as equally, if not more importantly as well. We caught up with Airin to chat about how she incorporates mindfulness into her daily routine, and how she readies herself for the day ahead in Beddoni’s first collection.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
The first thing that I do is to set my intention for the day, as it’s important to set your mind right before kickstarting the day.
How do you get your day going? Is there a favourite quote you live by?
A 10 minute meditation session, a page of Kindness Boomerang and breakfast are my must-dos every morning. “Rise and rise again till lambs become lions.” Being a freelancer, it takes a lot to make it work. Some days we fail, some day we aren’t our best, but we should never give up just because it is hard. To me, a life with purpose and kindness is a life worth living.
Do you like to take your time in the mornings to get ready, or do you prefer to be efficient in the mornings?
I’m actually more efficient in the morning, I keep things fuss-free so that I can fully utilise my time.
How important is your morning routine to you for the rest of the day ahead?
It is extremely important to me. When you put the right food and thoughts in your mind and body early in the morning, it shifts the way you look at things. It’s a mental pep-talk that hey, you can do this!
How has your morning routine changed over the years?
Previously, I had the luxury of time to prepare and work out before I kickstart my day. But these days, as work gets more erratic, I try to get ready within 45 minutes.
Favourite skincare products in the morning?
In the morning, my skincare is a 4-step routine. But sunscreen is my favourite and an essential. You’ll be thankful for the miracle bottle 10 years down the road.
No makeup makeup, or actually no makeup?
If you have reached a point where you truly feel comfortable and confident in your own skin, what you adorn it with should reflect it. Sticking with well-chosen, adeptly applied and blended makeup in flattering shades gives a timeless look that can make ordinary features stunning.
What’s your go-to look for the day ahead? Do you plan your outfits ahead or pick randomly?
As much as I love dressing up, my go-to look is a tee and high waisted jeans. But yes, I plan what I want to wear the night before.
Are you a fan of accessories? What’s your usual?
YES, it’s a big part of me. Definitely earrings, it completes the look.
What sort of music would you be playing in the background as you get ready?
Definitely I Wanna Go by Summer Heart, All Good by Crade andDifferent Ways by Baysiq.
What books are currently on your coffee table or nightstand?
The latest issue of Monocle, The Book of Awakening by Mark Nepo and my cosmeceuticals and cosmetic ingredients textbook!
